In one of those times while searching for inspiration, I picked up an old book entitled “Leaves of Gold” copyrighted by Evan S. Coslett. This old book was given to me by Mrs. Roy Parker just after her husband Rev. Roy Parker had went to Heaven. Contained in this old book are the thoughts of many people who have since “passed on”. As I began reading my thoughts went back to a time, just after Roy’s death, while sitting at Mrs. Parker’s kitchen table enjoying a cup of her good coffee and lessening to how things used to be “ back in the day”; When Mrs. Parker stopped in almost mid-sentence and said: “That Roy Parker makes me so mad”! Why is that I asked. She simply said with tears in her eyes and a smile on her face, “Roy got to Heaven before I did”. When I think of that summer morning and the thoughts Mrs. Parker imparted to me I get a smile on my face and a tear in my eye as well.
In the “Forward” of the book, “Leaves of Gold” is written this truth: “ Poor is the man whose mind is not enriched by some phrase of lasting truth and beauty which serves to restore his soul in the exigencies of life”; with that being said here are the thoughts of a person by the name of Dinger:
Greatest:
My greatest loss – To lose my soul
My greatest gain – Christ my Savior
My greatest object – To glorify God
My greatest pride – A crown of glory
My greatest work – To tell others about Christ
My greatest joy – The joy of God’s salvation
My greatest inheritance – Heaven
My greatest victory – Over death through through Christ
My greatest neglect – To neglect so great a salvation
My greatest crime – To reject Christ the only Savior
My greatest privilege – Power to become a child of God
My greatest bargain – To lose all things to win Christ
My greatest profit – Godliness in this life and the life to come
My greatest peace – That peace that surpasses our understanding
My Greatest knowledge – To know God and his son Jesus
The words of Mrs. Parker were said to me in the 1980’s the thoughts of Dinger were pinned before 1935. The point of this devotional is this: Our thoughts which are expressed through our lips affect people for many years, many times even after we have “passed on”. These words either are a blessing to others or they bring much pain and hurt and we get to choose which it will be. May our prayer be: “May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my Redeemer. (Psalms 19:14) (NIV)
>Learning in Life: Learn from the mistakes of others; you won’t live long enough to make them all yourself. (I Corinthians 10:1- 12)
>Destination; Anywhere: The person who doesn’t know where he is going usually gets there in record time. (Psalms 25:1-5)
>Unseen Obstacles: The ladder of life is full of splinters- most of which you don’t see until you start sliding down. (Psalms 25:16-21)
>Hardened Minds: Some minds are like concrete- all mixed up and permanently set. (Romans 8:5-11 & Philippians 4:8)
>Temper: Temper gets most of us in trouble, but it is pride that keeps us there. (Proverbs 16:17-20)
>Grace: God loves us the way we are – but cares too much to leave us that way. (1 Timothy 1:12-17)
